We believe that by supporting students, we're helping to foster the leaders of tomorrow—not just future leaders in our business but also in our communities. In addition to our operating companies' numerous scholarships and bursaries, Emera awards two scholarships each year.

The Chris Huskilson Emera Scholarship was created in 2018 to honour former Emera President & CEO Chris Huskilson. Valued at $40,000, the scholarship is awarded to an Atlantic Canadian student attending an Atlantic Canadian university in a program related to science (natural), technology, engineering, entrepreneurship or math. Recipients receive $10,000 per year for four years. They're also eligible for a paid 12-week internship and will work with a senior mentor from one of Emera’s companies.

The Emera Employees' Children Scholarship is a one-time, non-renewable $2,000 award available to children/dependents of regular employees and retirees of Emera Inc., Emera Energy, Emera New Brunswick and Emera Newfoundland & Labrador. Other Emera operating companies maintain their scholarship programs. Recipients may have the opportunity for a paid internship at Emera Inc. Past winners are permitted to re-apply each year.

Aaron Chaulk of Springdale, NL, is the recipient of the Emera Chris Huskilson Scholarship for 2024. A graduate of Indian River High School, Aaron says being selected for this scholarship is life-changing. “For me, this scholarship was the difference between attending university or not," says Aaron. "I’ll be the first in my family to attend post-secondary studies." Aaron is eager to start in the Bachelor of Science program at Memorial University this fall. "Though it’s foreign territory, I’ve always strived to push the limits of people’s expectations of me. I hope to use this opportunity to its full potential," he says.

Emera Employees’ Children Scholarship is awarded to Isabelle Patten of Halifax, Nova Scotia who is a graduate of Halifax West High School. "This generous support will enable me to concentrate on my academic pursuits, community engagement, and personal well-being as I undertake my undergraduate degree," says Isabelle. "I deeply appreciate Emera’s commitment to supporting my educational journey. This assistance brings me one step closer to realizing my ultimate academic goal of becoming a nurse.”
